Featured Puzzle: Kin-Kon-Kan #1 – Time to Reflect

The final day of the year is typically a time of reflection. Naturally, that calls for a puzzle about reflecting things! This is Kin-Kon-Kan, a puzzle about placing mirrors. Draw a diagonal line in only one cell within each region.

  • Each region must contain one and only one diagonal mirror in a single cell.
  • Identical letter-number pairs outside the grid must be connected by lasers, though you needn’t draw them in the solution.
  • The number in the pair indicates how many times that laser bounces off a mirror.
  • Each bounce reflects a laser 90 degrees.
  • Every mirror must reflect at least one laser beam.

The actual solution only needs the mirrors. I wanted to show it with the lasers as well, so you can see the paths. I’m torn though, because it might look a little too busy. What do you think?

Saint Patrick was a fifth century Christian missionary in Ireland. Interestingly, he was actually British, kidnapped by pirates and held as a slave in Ireland for 6 years before escaping. Later, he returned to proselytize. Another fun bit of trivia – the four-leaf clover is not a shamrock. A shamrock has only 3 leaves, and Saint Patrick used it during a sermon to illustrate the concept of the Holy Trinity.

Today, we’re playing Meadows. Simply divide the grid into square regions. Every region must contain exactly one four-leaf clover.

Featured Puzzle: Gemini Sudoku #1

In Gemini Sudoku, you’re given a pair of Sudoku grids. The grid on the right works like a cipher for the grid on the left. Wherever a digit appears in the left grid, it maps to a specific digit in the same position in the right grid. For example 4 in the left grid might map to a 6 in the right grid. This means that for every 4 you discover on the left, you can place a 6 in the same position on the right.
