Featured Puzzle: Trail Signs #1 – A Walk in the Park

Happy National Trails Day! The first Saturday in June is a day to celebrate your local trail system and go for a walk. Today, you must examine the signs in the grid and deduce the route the trail takes. I liked the Castle Wall puzzle created by Palmer Mebane in 2009, and re-themed it as Trail Signs.

  • Draw a single, non-intersecting closed loop passing through some, but no necessarily all, empty cells in the grid.
  • Black signs must be outside the loop. White signs must be inside the loop. Gray signs might be inside or outside the loop.
  • Numbers on arrow signs indicate how many times the loop crosses a cell border in that direction. These segments might not be contiguous.

Be on the lookout for a future Trail Signs Solving Guide.

I couldn’t resist filling the remaining empty cells with some nature decorations. If you enjoyed the Trail Signs puzzle, I plan to include more in a nature-themed puzzle book I’m working on.
